Over The Moon
We are over the moon with moon names, as is the rest of the world. Luna, Ayla, Selena and Phoebe all have a spot in the top 300 with Luna talking the lead at number 14. Moon names are especially appealing to astrologers and astronomers alike. Moon names dominated our own blog post under “Cancer Zodiac” as it is their ruling planet. From names that mean moon to mini moons to moon phases, it’s no wonder these celestial names eclipse all others.

Full Moons
A little one born under a full moon is such a special occasion. Full Moons represent blessings, blossoming celebrations and gratitude. Ol’ folklore tales say babies born around the full moon enjoy success and endurance. This month brought us the super rare Sturgeon Blue moon. For this full moon you can go various different routes when picking out an influential name.
Sturgeon is an occupation name that means fisherman. It’s also the common name of 27 species of fish belonging to the Acipenseridae family. Names like Finn, Fisher, Fishel, Marlin, Mina or Pike would be a cute nod for your little full moon fishy.
For the rare occurrence of the blue moon you could choose a name that means rare. Singer Halsey recently chose the name Ender for her rare bundle of joy. Other rare choices include Alabi, Nahir and Zhen.
A blue moon could draw in some colorful vibes as well with names like Cerulean, Maren, Robin, Skye, Yale or just Blue as Beyoncé did back in 2012.
Our top pick for this months moon name is Nikini. Pronounced like “Nik-inn-ie” Nikini is of Sinhalese origin meaning “Full Moon in August”.
Just like the August full moon has the fancy name of Sturgeon, all monthly full moons come with a Native American name. Wolf Moons, Snow Moons, Harvest Moons and Hunters moons glow full and bright during January, February, September and October which can lead to some symbolic inspiration too. Our favorites include Conan, Lowella, Eira, Lumi, Chase, Oringo, Annona and Arista.
While full moons are fulfilling, just like the moon, names go through phases. Lets not forget about the other moon phases.
Neoma
Origin: Greek - Meaning: New Moon
Meeza
Origin: Hindu - Meaning: Quarter Moon
Hilal
Origin: Turkish - Meaning Crescent Moon
While there is no name to represent the waxing or waning gibbous you can always choose a similar sounding name like Gibbs, Gibson, Gibsonton or Gilbert.
Lets not forget our favorite lunar event. The United States got to see a solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. A rare event that won’t occur here again until April 8, 2024. It was the first eclipse to be visible from the lower 48 since 1979 and the first solar eclipse visible across the whole nation since 1918. Many suggested the names Apollo and Luna for little ones born on this day. Any names related to the sun and moon could work but our favorite is actually Baily. Named after Francis Baily, the Baily’s beads effect is the feature of total and annular solar eclipse. As the sun covers the moon beams of sunlight shine through. Over on nancy.cc I noticed the suggestion of the Irish name Sullivan meaning “descendant of the little dark eye”, which I thought was genius!
After seeing so many names it’s certainly clear why everyone is over the moon about these celestial beauties. These moon names will forever shine bright for generations to come.
